Updated: Oct 19, 2020

Hey Crazy Bird Lady today we’re gonna be talking about whether to clip or not to clip your bird wings which is one of the most controversial topics in the avian community. First let’s start with what exactly is clipping a birds wings which is cutting the primary flight feathers of your birds wings so it can’t fly as shown in the picture below. Now before you say why would someone do that to a bird they are meant to fly ?! Well it really depends on the owner and their bird there are a lot of pros and cons to clipping a birds wings so let’s start with a list scroll down below to read the list. Now there really isn’t a right or wrong answer to this subject it’s really depends on the person and their opinion considering it is a hugely controversial subject. I personally do not take a right or wrong approach to it I believe their good factors and bad ones and as I said before it depends on the person and what they would prefer and their situation. But if you do decide to get your birds wings clipped I suggest always going to a professional to get it done and do not do it at home as if you don’t do it right could cause damage and trauma to your bird. And always remember if you clip your birds wings and regret it after the clipped feathers will grow back in a few months to a year.

Pros to wing clipping

  1. can make training your bird easier and possibly have a stronger bond with your bird as they can’t fly so they will depend on your more to get around etc.

  2. can keep the bird from escaping and flying away so you don’t loose your bird

  3. can keep them from getting hurt by hitting a window or anything that your bird could injure itself on while flying

  4. can make it easier to catch your bird for vet visits and getting your bird in the carrier

  5. easier to get them to go in their cage and stay there

Cons to clipping a birds wings

  1. your taking away the primary defence way to escape from harm from other animals

  2. your taking away their easiest form of exercise so they could easily gain weight which is not healthy for your bird so you’ll will have to take them out and play with them more often to prevent weight gain

  3. They will rely on you a lot more so you will need to be spending lots of time with them and not ignore them

  4. you can’t flight training them or teach them any flying tricks
